- Today, Kyoto has become a city with many competing chocolate shops, including overseas brands and those directly operated by top chefs. +chocolat, which carries a selection of bean-to-bar products, was founded in Miyagawa-cho near the Kamo River (a famous cherry blossom viewing spot). A traditional townhouse, previously used as a tea bar, was remodeled into this shop with dining space.
- Owner Rie Miyahara said, “Having traveled to farms and chocolateries across the world, I wanted to share their delicious flavors with many people.” She sources chocolate bars she loves from around the globe that are of course tasty, but also with an eye to qualities such as package design.
- In addition to roughly 100 types of bars, you can also sample recommended pieces of chocolate (350 yen each) paired with sencha green tea, herb tea, and alcoholic beverages. With the opening of +chocolat, Kyoto has one more chocolate shop you’ll want to visit during the cherry blossom season.
