- If you look up art in Yokohama, there is a word that always comes to your attention. That’s BankART1929. The project aims to revitalize the city by making use of historical buildings for cultural and artistic purposes. It was named Bank + ART after its start using the buildings of former Daiichi Bank and Fuji Bank, which were built in 1929.
- “Yokohama has an identity of building the city by ourselves. Based on the idea of the art for the city development, we are promoting activities.” says Osamu Ikeda, the head of the project. BankART1929 has worked to re- vitalize the city by running various exhibitions, workshops, cafes, and libraries, and has supported artists by providing studios and houses with the city. This year marks the 16th anniversary since it started. It has repeatedly moved to various places such as port warehouses and old buildings, and now has four bases in the town, including Bank ART Station located on the premises of Shin-Takashima Station. It continues to light the city while planting seeds of art in each place.
