  • The name of the Sanyo region, facing Seto Inland Sea, is considered to be from Gokishichido (5 provinces and 7 circuits), which was a name for ancient administrative divisions organized before the Taika Reforms in the mid-seventh century. This region is a geographical setting of such tales as folklore “Momotaro” as well as recent movies and dramas showing scenery that makes the audience want to visit. Sanyo is also well known for its production of high-quality craft sake. Harima in Hyogo prefecture is said to be the origin of sake brewing. In the bordering prefectures, Okayama and Hiroshima, as well, the tradition of sake brewing has been followed, using Yamada Nishiki, the king of sake rice. Visitors can find attractive dishes made of local ingredients including brand fruits and specialty vegetables, not to mention seafood. Beautiful natural scenery, nostalgic building, an art museum rooted in the area, and a lot of good food attract travelers to Sanyo.
