- Some 230 wood funaya (boathouses) encircle south-facing Ine Bay. Located in Ine Town in northern Kyoto Prefecture, these traditional structures, distinctive to the region, consist of a boat garage on the first floor and living and storage spaces on the second floor. Fishing has been a prosperous industry in Ine since ancient times, and the ocean is central to life here. The unique and charming scenery is an embodiment of the lives of the people who have made their living through the blessings of the sea. The lush mountains looming around the town also support the abundance of the ocean in the area. Additionally, visitors can go on a scenic ride or drive and take in the local sprawling terraced rice fields.
The funaya are still lived in by ordinary people today. When visiting, please bear this in mind and walk quietly when in the area.
